New York Times Reportedly Nears $330 Million Letterboxd Acquisition

The New York Times Company has reportedly entered exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd, the social network for film fans, for 330 million dollars, according to the Times's own report. The deal would add a fast-growing, youthful community platform to the publisher's expanding portfolio of games, cooking and consumer subscriptions and bundles.

Letterboxd, often compared to Goodreads for movies, has grown from three million users in January 2021 to 28 million by April 2026, with more than half under 35. It was reported in April to be seeking a new owner, with A24 and Sony said to be interested before A24 was reportedly priced out.

The service is free with a paid tier unlocking advanced features. Projected 2026 earnings are about 15 million dollars, roughly 4.5 percent of the reported price, suggesting the buyer is paying for audience growth rather than current profit. No agreement has been announced, and the final terms could still change later.
