Vera Rubin Observatory Spots Two New Milky Way Satellites

Data from the Vera Rubin Observatory revealed Aquarius IV, probably an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, and Rubin-GC1, a dust-shrouded globular cluster near the galactic bulge. Both came from early data released in July. Researchers expect the ten-year survey to uncover many more dim Milky Way companions and sharpen models of galaxy growth. Researchers expect the ten-year survey to deliver many more such discoveries in coming years.

JWST Clusters May Reveal Birthplaces of Early Black Hole Seeds

A new study suggests dense young star clusters seen by the James Webb Space Telescope could be birthplaces for intermediate-mass black holes. Clusters in the Cosmic Gems and Firefly Sparkle galaxies could form seeds of hundreds to thousands of solar masses, though no black hole was directly detected. The finding offers an important clue about how supermassive black holes may have grown so quickly after the Big Bang.
