Google Will Switch Off AI Tools for K-12 Schools by Default

Should classrooms get AI only when schools ask for it? Google announced it will turn off AI tools for K-12 students next year unless administrators explicitly enable them. That is a notable shift. The change follows consultation with schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers, and covers Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search.

There is a catch, though. A school that restricts AI entirely also loses Search, because AI features are built directly into the search engine. Chris Phillips, Google's vice president for education, said Search and AI are deeply integrated. TechCrunch says the trade-off shows how much leverage Google holds in classrooms and on Chromebooks.

More details are due in the coming months. The announcement arrived alongside Guided Learning, an AI tool designed to build understanding rather than simply hand over answers. For parents and teachers, the policy shift raises a practical question about how to balance student safety, learning goals and the growing presence of AI in everyday school software.
