Anthropic Filing Shows Compute Now Eats 58% of Its Revenue
What does it cost to run a frontier AI company at scale? The answer is expensive. Anthropic's updated SEC filing extends its financials through 30 September and shows quarterly revenue of 17 billion dollars, up from 11.5 billion. But the operating loss also grew, largely because compute costs climbed to 10 billion dollars.
Compute consumed 58 percent of revenue, up from 48 percent the previous quarter. Of the compute bill, 5.0 billion dollars was bought under short-term commitments, which cost far more than multi-year deals. Anthropic uses so-called neoclouds including SpaceX, Nscale, Akamai and Volta, and expects compute to remain its largest operating expense.
TechCrunch frames the margin decline as more of a temporary blip than a structural flaw. Still, risks such as bond-market stress or local opposition to data-centre buildouts could strain supply. The numbers offer a rare public look at how heavily the AI boom depends on securing enough chips and power at sensible prices.
