Court of Appeal Raises Henry Nowak Killer's Term to 25 Years
The Court of Appeal has increased the prison term of Henry Nowak's killer. Judges raised Vickrum Digwa's minimum term for murder from 21 years to 25 years, ruling the original sentence was unduly lenient and outside the range open to the sentencing judge in the case. Updates are expected soon.
Digwa, 23, was jailed for life at Southampton Crown Court after fatally stabbing the student in Southampton on December 3. He filmed Mr Nowak as he lay dying and falsely told emergency services that Mr Nowak had racially abused him. Attorney General Ellie Reeves referred the sentence to the court.
Baroness Carr described the filming as incomprehensible cruelty. Time Digwa has already spent in custody counts towards the longer term. The ruling follows the Attorney General's referral under the unduly lenient sentence scheme and will be closely watched by the family and campaigners calling for tougher sentences for violent crime.
