Citrus Scent Compounds Show Promise for Easing Gut Inflammation

The fragrance of an orange peel may do more than smell good. A review in Food and Function led by Zadra and colleagues examines whether terpenoids, the aromatic compounds in citrus, could calm inflammation in the gut, drawing on cell, rodent and human research gathered through May 2026. It is early science.

The human evidence is still thin, built on two irritable bowel syndrome trials. One uncontrolled study included nineteen patients, while a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled fifty-six. In the controlled trial, fifty-two percent of treated participants saw at least a fifty-point drop in their symptom severity score, beating placebo. Both studies were small.

The authors caution that these compounds dissolve poorly in water, which may limit how well the body absorbs them. Larger, longer trials are needed before anyone treats citrus terpenoids as a remedy, but the review points toward a promising, food-based direction for future gut health research. Terpenoids are widely found in plants.
